Achieving healthy weight for people with disabilities in the United States is a challenge. Obesity rates for adults and children with disabilities are significantly higher than for those without disabilities. Research has shown that as a disabled student ages, the amount of physical activity they participate in significantly decreases. Opportunities for social interaction diminishes as they graduate from high school which causes a sedentary lifestyle. By donating to our project our students will be inspired to exercise and share their physical achievements through activity trackers and apps with friends for the rest of their lives! Our plan is to set Fit Ability step goals with students and their families. We will have a group app in which all members can log in and share their achievements. As a group we will celebrate personal and group goals! Family members and students will be encouraged to stay connected with all participants of Fit Ability every year in order to offer social opportunities to individuals with special needs.
