My students have had the opportunity to be in a calm, peaceful environment full of flexible seating throughout this year. Unfortunately, my partner teacher owns most of these items and is relocating before the year ends, taking the items with her. My students will come back from spring break to a classroom that is missing the comfortable and homey atmosphere it had all year. Flexible seating allows the students to make a choice about how they best do their work. While some students find it relaxing to be on the floor, propped up with a lap desk, others prefer a stool or a way to allow their feet to swing. Several of my students struggle with attention disorders and by eliminating the need for them to be sat upright and still, they are more able to focus on the work that really matters. Being that I am a small group teacher, my room often serves as a place for my students to come to when they need a behavioral break from their normal classroom environment. Having colorful, soft and comfortable places for them to relax helps to deescalate tense situations. Many of my students come from bleak home lives where they don't have their own bedrooms with pillows, stuffed animals, colorful rugs, etc. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel at peace, and can settle into learning in a way that works for them.
