Being able to provide daily social emotional learning (SEL) opportunities is a must for our students. When we load kids with SEL tools, they are better able to effectively communicate their needs, identify physical symptoms of anxiety, increase empathy amongst their peers, and give kids tools to work appropriately in diverse situations. What benefits do we expect to see with consistent SEL opportunities with our students? Reduced emotional stress, improved attitudes and behaviors, increased self-confidence and better academic performance within our students. Sharing books with students The book, Wilma Jean the Worry Machine, details situations in which Wilma gets worried and ways to help her manage through the worry. The book, The Invisible Boy, allows kids to see through the lens of a child who feels lonely at school, and it will encourage discourse on how to help classmates. Activity guides will provide students with life lessons that will help them prepare for situations that may arise in their own lives. Being proactive in providing daily SEL lessons helps everyone. Kids receive tools in their "response belts" to use when faced with a future problem during the school day. Nurturing the emotional health of our students is vital in the ability to actively engage in rigorous, academic tasks.
