Chemical lab skill practice for our high school students is more relevant than ever in today's world, and hands-on lab skill development is a key component of coursework that piques students' interest to pursue further scientific study and deepens their experience and retention through inquiry and practice. Offering opportunities for hands-on engagement with rigorous lab experiences levels the playing field for all students by exposing them to high-level laboratory equipment and techniques that make them more likely to succeed in completing college science degrees. A set of spectrophotometers on our high school campus would allow students the opportunity to collect data from hands-on experiments while studying the applications of the visible light spectrum. In AP Chemistry, this tool would help with general analysis and experiments such as Beer-Lambert Law, reaction kinetics, molecular level analysis, and more. There are also cross-disciplinary opportunities for AP Biology students on campus to also use these spectrophotometers to study biological phenomena such as chlorophyll, protein, and photosynthetic pigments.
