I will be using novels with the same dystopian theme to challenge students to think of issues to solve in our current world. The main topics of this unit are mental health, current events, and historical connections to WWII. This unit is a precursor to the WWII unit they will complete in their 8th grade ELA curriculum. Dystopia gives students an easy access point to introduce them to the complications of their current world. This unit will be a quarter long and involve student choice in their reading and collaborative work when inquiring into similar themes between novels. Students will be using their novels to lead discussions and build the foundation of their Socratic seminar that asks the question: What problems are there in the world, and how can we solve them?
