We need to create a calming space in our building that will give students the therapeutic environment they need to help regulate their bodies. Sometimes our students need breaks beyond what can be accomplished in the calming corner of the classroom. They also need guided support through the de-escalation process. The space will be a place where they can learn how to regulate feelings of anger, sadness, disappointment, and frustration so that they can return to the classroom emotionally ready to learn. School-wide, students are taught to identify their feelings and are given tools to regulate their emotions (Zones of Regulation). One of the biggest struggles for students is putting what they have learned into practice. The calming space is the perfect extension of both Zones and trauma-informed practices. The outcome will be an increased number of students that are able to self-regulate within the classroom as well as increased positive relationships with other adults in the building. It will also improve the learning environment for students throughout the building. With the use of calming aids and support, we will see an increase in coping skills with a reflection on academic scores.
