Flexible seating is an alternative to traditional seating, which allows students the ability to move and reduces the duration of sedentary sitting periods. Flexible seating options include stools, couches, beanbag chairs, inflatable balls, and sit-to-stand desk risers. Flexible seating has numerous benefits to students’ overall well-being: socially, emotionally, academically, and behaviorally. Flexible seating allows students to have choice and control over their environment. Additionally, it enables students the freedom to move and wiggle, which in turn increases oxygen flow to the brain. Numerous studies have recognized how physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Also, when a student is given choice in seating, it leads to a sense of ownership, investment, and accountability for their own learning and academic achievement. In general, a classroom culture and learning environment can have a direct impact on a student’s achievement. Flexible seating is one opportunity to provide student engagement and increased achievement through physical activity. In conclusion, flexible seating will lower disruptive behavior, increase attention to tasks, and increase the reading levels and overall student achievement of my special education students.
