To build community in my classroom and develop my students excitement in literature I have started a special class each month titled "Feature Friday". Every 3rd Friday of the month I give my students a sneak peek of a novel that I love and want to share. We talk about the author and we read the first chapter together to build anticipation and interest in the story. I encourage them to keep reading! Many of them don't live close to a library, so I hold a drawing during class and choose a winner who will receive a copy of the book in the mail. The excitement this builds for the kids to experience new stories is invaluable to their reading and writing skills. I want to nurture a love of reading in each one of them and these novels give me the opportunity to show them what is waiting for them in the world of books.
