Research shows that exposure to literature helps readers to develop a sense of empathy and compassion, traits that will enable my students to be thoughtful, responsible members of our classroom and community. Diverse voices are an integral part of of our classroom library; all students should have the opportunity to engage with texts that serve as mirrors of their own experiences and windows into the experiences of others. Our curriculum reading list highlights voices that are not representative of the young adults in my classroom. Therefore, I aim to build a classroom library that supplements these canonical works with books in which my students, with their diverse array of experiences, can see themselves.
