I recently checked in with my students about how they were feeling overall about school and our classroom, and while many responses were positive there were a few that expressed that we needed to work more on being kind toward others. I told them I knew they were all kind students, and asked what they found challenging about being kind to others. The response I got took my breath away. "Mrs. J, I would be kind to that person but I don't know them." It was then that I knew I needed to create this project.
All of these books have been intentionally chosen with a student or situation in mind. Many of these books are about feelings, because I believe that without being about to identify feelings and emotions, we cannot fully learn how to empathize with others- especially when sometimes the way others express their emotions are different than how we do. Many of these books also showcase a diverse background of characters, and these have all been chosen with the intention of being used to help students learn more about certain cultures in order to be more understanding towards them in real life.
I firmly believe that with these books, my students will be able to gain an awareness for others that will lead them to being kinder, more empathetic friends and people in the world.
