In first grade, students are not only solidifying their understanding of foundational math concepts like counting, adding, and subtracting; they are also building their fluency. Fluency is the ability to do all these things quickly and mentally! Fluency instruction can be boring, when taught through flashcards and speed drills, but those are not the only options! Fluency games like Shut the Box!, I Sea 10, and Math War will allow students to build fluency while also having fun, laughing, and working with their peers. Learning through gameplay also has many other benefits. Students learn how to lose (and win!) with good sportsmanship, how to persist in the face of difficulty, how to work together as a team, and to view learning as enjoyable work. Thank you for all your support and love for my sweet students!
