Students need access to books. They develop many skills when they read novels. We also need them to learn history to broaden their minds. Historical fiction is the best way to accomplish this. Counting on Grace is a great book to teach history and literacy standards. Students will connect to Grace and practice those skills while falling in love with this book. There are many activities and discussions that accompany this book which will deepen their understanding of literacy and social studies standards. Allowing every student to have a copy will give them ownership in their reading. It will also hold them accountable for reading the text because they will be required to complete standards-based assignments.
