Ten-year-olds read voraciously, devouring one book after another. Our class schedule has time dedicated daily to independent reading because our students benefit from more time reading. That is why it breaks my heart when students cannot find the books they want in our classroom library. We go to the school library once a week, but that is not enough for my students to find the books they want. My students will be thrilled to have books by popular authors as well as popular series in their classroom library. I imagine that my students will feel like they are in a candy shop. The classroom library represents the home of our class' reading community (Mulligan & Landrigan, 2018). Students will choose books on their just-right level. Then, they will think, talk, and write about the books. A sign of success is when students make recommendations to each other about what to read when adults are not around. With your help, we can build a classroom library that supports our fifth grade readers and writers.
