I teach at a school in Michigan with 95% of the students living at the poverty level. My first graders come to school with many issues including dirty clothes, lack of nutritional food, lack of essential supplies for good hygiene, lack of very basic school supplies just to name a few. Often there is very little support given at home where school work is concerned. My students need to constantly be encouraged to stay motivated and engaged. Providing an interesting way to practice reading will keep my struggling students excited to stay on task and push themselves to reach their goals.
