I love to read great literature in my classroom and my students love to listen and interact as I read to them. They are learning the skills of making predictions and inferences. They are developing a broad vocabulary as we encounter new words and as they describe characters and settings. Students are also learning social and emotional skills from the books we have read. They enjoy immersing themselves into the story as we follow the characters through conflict, problem solving, empathy, and other social skills that, in the end, lead to a harmonious conclusion. As we read, students are inadvertently learning to understand others and understand themselves. They are learning to be responsible, empathize with others, problem solve, develop friendships, take responsibility, as well as many other life skills that we are able to implement and practice in our classroom and in our school community. The literature I have chosen will give me the opportunity to introduce more of the Social and Emotional Learning domains to my students. They will continue to grow as kind and considerate classmates as we laugh and learn through new books added to our classroom library.
