When I work with students as the school psychologist, my office becomes a space for children to recenter, share their stories, build skills, and refocus. I work with my children who are often struggling and facing adversity. Books allow children to find solace and friendship through other people's stories; be the book be about a child like themselves, a lesson needing to be learned, or the opportunity to learn a new aspect of the world. As an avid reader myself, I see on a daily basis how books offer a nest to children when the world does not always appear too kind; moreover, I am always humbled in the ways a child who has access to a variety of books increases their academic abilities and the possibility to enhance behavioral/emotional well being. The accessibility to books is also the possibility of world and self-discovery. My hope is to build my "nest" into a place children are allowed to enhance their holistic well being, but engaging in the activity of reading, whilst also having permission to explore other worlds, cultures, emotions, and situations that they may face in the future. Children need adults to believe in them, and in my line of work, providing children the permission to self-accept and develop more intrinsic kindness towards the people who are different is what I advocate on behalf of each day.
