Third grade is a year of transition for many students as they make the switch from learning to read to becoming readers. Students begin engaging in deep discussions about their book choices as well as inferring, connecting to the text, predicting and responding to their reading. We discuss character traits and development, theme, plot, and more in class together so students can then practice these skills with their own book. Book clubs encourage community. Students can deepen their comprehension and connections to books when they engage in discussions with their peers. Reading becomes a way to connect with others rather than an individual experience. Students can learn from each other as they discuss new vocabulary, reactions to the story, questions, predictions, and connections. My students need book club text choices that are engaging and high quality. My readers are all different, so they need a variety of books to meet their needs. The books that I have selected for this project will reach students at a variety of skill levels so that all of my students can continue growing as readers. The book sets could also be used by other classrooms in my building to further spread the benefits of book club reading.
