In May, I will be taking 10 of my students on a 5-day canoeing trip down The Delaware River. I have been teaching in Philadelphia urban schools for 10 years, and this will be my fourth Outward Bound expedition with my students. The impact this program has on students is phenomenal. For many of them, it is completely life-changing. Outward Bound trips encourage growth and discovery, and inspire leadership, self-reliance, compassion, and care for their environment. I have seen it happen many times before: a student who is timid or shy comes back with confidence and leadership skills. It will no doubt have a positive influence on these students, who will come back and share their knowledge with others.
