Our class is made up of students who face a unique set of challenges. These students spend their day at school in a language that is difficult for them to understand. When they enter our room, they enter a safe space where creativity can flourish and brains can take a break. Students need a place where they feel at home, free to wiggle and take a brain break. With flexible seating, these "kids" can feel at home and take ownership of their learning. When I asked my students what they would like to see change in our room or in our lessons they asked for a carpet and different lighting. Something so simple as changing the lighting and giving something soft for them to touch was what they wanted. I would love to be able to meet this desire of my "kids."
Many of my students ask daily to stand, walk around, or sit by a window. Through this project, students will be allowed to take a break from a normal desk and sit in a seat of their choosing. Yoga chairs offer students the ability to bounce while working. Tall tables allow high schoolers with long legs to stretch out and give their cramped legs a break. Students will be able to unlock their creativity when their energy is allowed to find an escape through their seating.
Overcoming the barriers students bring into the classroom is the first step for teachers. With flexible seating, students are given the opportunity to take ownership and responsibility for their classroom. They will be able to find what works for them. This project will unlock the ability for students to find how they learn best.
