Our 6th grade students just completed reading The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander. Saying they liked it is an understatement. One student said he would pay the teacher $10 to keep reading the book. You can only imagine the joy that we felt with such a strong response to this book choice. All the skills and reading strategies became fluid using this book. The more we can have them reading independently, the higher their scores should be by the end of the school year. The students are on a roll trying to find other books in verse that are just as captivating. It is now a unanimous vote to see if we can get a class set of Rebound, the prequel to The Crossover, I do not think we could contain the joy in the 6th grade if this could be fulfilled.
