All of my students across 4th, 5th, and 6th grades are asked to regularly read independently and write or orate reading responses. I often notice that the students have trouble finding books they are truly excited to read in teachers' classroom libraries, and our school does not have a fully-stocked, large-scale library. Additionally, my colleague and I host a "reading cafe" for an hour on Fridays, during which time our students can really enjoy quiet reading time. JK Rowling said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book." I wish to build a classroom library with options that my students tell me they are interested in. I feel that providing students with books that excite them will promote lifelong reading. There is nothing like reading to help unlock our imaginations and hopefully help these children cope with the challenges they face in their private lives.
