Our classroom library theme is "Read Like a Champion Today," and students fall in love with "filling out medals." Each medal represents a book they have read independently. In addition to the many hours' students spend with eyes on a text in class each day, my students commit to reading their independent reading books each night for at least 20 minutes. They take pride in being able to display their completion of a book through the medal that is posted in our library. Students can only fill out medals, however, if they have access to high-quality, diverse books in our classroom library. The students love to track their medals throughout the year to compete against themselves to see how many amazing new books they can read.
