My students are finishing their investigation of the radio active contamination in their neighborhood, Bay View. Students have written reports as investigative journalists and also tied in other environmental injustice issues that they see in their communities. In April, students will take the information that they have gathered about environmental injustice in their communities and create a graphic novel proposal, in which a kid from their neighborhood uses an empathetic approach to combat one of the injustices that they found. We will be using the graphic novel, Margo Maloo as a mentor text to analyze how narrative devices contribute to characterization, theme, and setting. As of now, we do not have the funding to give the students individual copies of these books. If each student were to have their own per class, they would have the ability to take their time to draw inspiration from the dynamic colors, form, and plot line. This book is a perfect mentor text for my students to engage with and provide them with many creative ways to portray theme, setting, and context through images.
