Looking through my classroom library while preparing to teach about Black History Month this year made me realize how sparse our books about people of color truly are, which is a shame. My students are so passionate about social justice and have loved learning about influential and inspirational black people both from the past and contemporary times. I want my students to have a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips when we celebrate Black History Month in the future. By adding these titles to our library, the children will be able to read about men and women who have made, and continue to make, differences in our world today. Scientists, inventors, athletes, politicians, and of course, Civil Rights leaders are all present in these titles. I have also included a few titles about San Diego's indigenous people, the Kumeyaay, as well as a few sets of leveled readers, which will be of more interest to my students than the current ones in our library.
