The majority of my day is spent teaching math to groups of gifted and talented students in grades 3-5. I use an enrichment program that pushes them beyond grade-level curriculum. My students understand that part of learning is struggling through challenging work. I have started challenging them after they complete their classwork with a project to create a mosaic template that they can then create a 3-D model using 3 by 3 puzzle cubes, similar to a Rubik's cube. After they finish their mosaic, they are so proud to take a picture with it that I post to our district website. In my classroom, we know the struggle is real, and worth it!I By donating to this project, we will be able to continue to offer opportunities that increase student engagement, creativity, and overall academic achievement. This project has quickly taken off, to the point that I have a waiting list of students waiting to create their mozaic. I am in desperate need of more cubes so that the students don't have to wait to complete their creation. We know that giving students choice in their own education will increase their performance and overall success. This project fosters that as well as increasing their creativity. In the future my plan is to start a mosaic club to give more students the opportunity to create their own mosaics.
