A class set of the multi-award-winning graphic novel New Kid by Jerry Craft will be a welcome addition to our school library. Teachers will become involved in the lessons this book will prompt. It will not only encourage meaningful and thoughtful discussion about race, it will also help students who are the "new kid" since many of our students come from local military families who move routinely. I foresee an opportunity to ignite a reading spark and fan it into a life-long reading fire for my middle school students who love-love-love graphic novels! Students will be motivated to want to read. Hopefully, by reading more they will achieve academically while they discover the wonder and joy that reading can bring to their lives.
