My 9th-grade students read any book of choice for every single class. They share recommendations of books they loved referencing the author's tone, theme, and characters. This activity allows my students to conference with me showing they can use the skills we have learned in class: analyzing characterization, theme, tone, and citing textual evidence. My student library has allowed some of my students to read a book for the first time in their lives! Research shows that reading daily is the best way to boost reading skills. This class library has completely changed the way I teach. I have been teaching for fourteen years, but I now understand how much representation matters and my own perspectives have kept me from giving my students what they need in the classroom. It would be an honor to show my students the world cares about them as much as I do.
