Research shows that by providing students with choice in reading materials, they are more likely to be engaged in what they are reading. It also enables them to choose materials that fit better with their reading abilities. Providing the opportunity to choose from contemporary authors also creates excitement for reading. In order to provide choice that truly represents what students want to read, I need to keep my classroom library current, with a variety of genres and reading levels. Classics are great, and they can also be offered as choices, but when students see themselves represented in the materials, it shows them that they matter. Furthermore, choice offers students a chance to see things from multiple points of view and cultures. They can see how humans are connected, even though we may also be very diverse.
