All students benefit from hands on materials, but this is especially true for students with learning disabilities. For these students, being able to learn by doing is essential for growth. Using math and science manipulatives helps students develop deeper understanding and helps them become life long learners. Success builds success. I have asked for a variety of items because I have learners at a variety of levels. The math locks and sliders will help students master basic facts-- a foundation for math. The fraction kits will make learning fractions become more concrete, enabling them to learn critical concepts. The cash register will help students learn life skills related to shopping and working in a store. Finally, the Billy Goat Gruff kit will give the students a way to work on problem solving skills. It will also help them develope perseverance, a crucial life skill. Hands on learning is crucial to their development.
