I have students who have a smart phone, but not a book. They have not been encouraged to see the value in reading a book. Picking up a book has always been associated with an assignment rather than enjoyment. I have begun an active campaign in my class to read every day, yet many of my students do not have a book accessible to them at all times. The Guided Reading allows me to work with students to pick out a book that is at their reading level, have a conversation with them about it or create a book pairing with a peer, and ensure all students are reading.
