The Lorax by Dr. Seuss will be used to engage students in authentic reading and writing activities. The book, The Lorax, was adopted because it supports the theme of taking caring of the environment. Every teacher will read aloud, The Lorax, and engage students in developmentally appropriate lessons and activities. Kindergarten students will draw pictures and write sentences about The Lorax. First grade students will read The Lorax. They will wear crazy socks, and write poems using rhyming words from the text. Second grade students will learn about the life of Dr. Seuss and write facts about Dr. Seuss. They will write about and retell the events of the book, The Lorax and write poems about Dr. Seuss' book, The Lorax. Third grade students will read The Lorax to compare and contrast the characters and how each character had an effect on their land. They will write a letter to one of the characters. Fourth and fifth grade students will write poems about the earth based on their reading of, The Lorax. They will summarize the story and make connections concerning the responsibility of each citizen to care for the earth and the consequences to the environment if they do not. Community members will also be invited to read, The Lorax, to classes at all grade levels.
