I teach in a juvenile detention center. My students have a lot of down time to read. In fact, most of them read way more inside detention than they ever would outside. This is a great opportunity to capture their attention through books that speak directly into their lives. I have carefully crafted a list of books that I want to put in students' hands and this is just the beginning of it here. I have researched the top books for incarcerated youth and also spoken with students about the books that have impacted them the most. With these new books, more of our students will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of quality books that will speak words of hope into their lives. These are books that deal with real issues that our students face and not only have the ability to encourage students, but also to inspire and instill within them a love for reading. Some of our students read 3-4 hours a day and one of the biggest requests is for more good books to be available.
