In Algebra I, students are given a graphing calculator and taught all the amazing things that can be calculated with it. By the time they reach Algebra II or College Math-Prep, they feel they cannot complete their work successfully without a graphing calculator as they have become too reliant on it. With the TI-30XIIS scientific calculators, my students will work their way to becoming 'Master Graphers' as they must learn the methods to graphing functions without a graphing calculator. These calculators allow students to still make basic calculations, but it will not hinder their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills on concepts such as graphing, matrices, integral calculus, etc.. These skills will continue to develop and prove beneficial on exams such as the SAT and TSI (Texas Success Initiative) which limit calculator use on certain questions. Many of these upper-level mathematics students also compete in UIL-Academics contests which these calculators are one of four UIL approved devices. Having the opportunity to regularly use these calculators will prove advantageous when UIL season is upon them!
