Genius Hour Projects provide high schoolers with what they want most - a voice that is welcomed, heard, and accepted. It tells them that their passions and aspirations are valid. While it is difficult to deviate from curriculum, allowing students to learn what interests them is essential for growth. This quarter, our class is dedicating every other Friday to Genius Hour. With guidance, research, and donations, my students will pursue their individual goals and passions. Because they're based on choice, these projects are unlike anything my kids have ever done in school. One student will use a Cricut machine and subscription to design his own clothes. Upon reflecting on her diverse community and career goals, another student decided to learn how to cut, dye, and style all types of hair. A small group came together with a mutual calling for advocating against drunk driving within their district. With the right resources and support, I know these students can make a worthwhile difference in their communities.
