A Long Walk to Water details two stories; that of a girl who must walk to the village well twice daily to provide water for her family and that of a boy driven from his home and made a refugee. The plot of the book is easily understood and accessible for my students, and the book itself is rich in description and literary elements. Exploring the book will be a great way for my students to develop their reading and writing skills. Beyond the literary value, A Long Walk to Water contains several themes that apply to and will hopefully inspire my students. Dealing with adversity, persevering when the odds are stacked against you, forgiveness, and giving back to others are all displayed, among others. This book gives the opportunity to not only teach the literary components, but also to explore so many ideas and traits that will be beneficial to my students, in addition to the academic context.
