Every day a different student comes to the library asking for a new manga (Japanese-style comics). It is exciting to see students who are often so reluctant to read check out book after book because they are so interested in this style of material. I am getting to know more students and form relationships with them because of their love of manga. Yet, as you can see from the empty manga shelf in the photo, most of my manga is typically checked out and I have a very long waiting list for many of these titles. Ours is a 5th and 6th grade campus which, I have found, are difficult years for reading. When students leave 4th grade, many are still reading picture books and graphic novels. They are quickly expected to transition to novels, which becomes a struggle for the majority of our students. Since they find reading novels difficult and frustrating, they gravitate toward graphic novels, such as manga. Moreover, our students have lost a great deal of instructional time due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are struggling with reading more than ever. If I can provide them with books that they enjoy, such as the My Hero Academia series, they may once again (or for the first time!) discover a love of reading.
