When students are given a choice of where they think they can best do their work, they will do their best. They will do some of their best thinking, learning, and doing. Flexible seating allows just this! It allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Right now, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room. They can work in our in-class library, on the rug using clipboards, at different tables, at the kidney table where they can get direct help from me, next to my beloved T.A.'s desk, or outside in a bench area. When students are comfortable in a working/learning environment, they are more motivated to do work and are much more engaged and excited. When my kids are given the opportunity to select their own location to work, they are much more engaged in their work and are less disruptive of their peers. In addition, as a second year teacher, I am still short of a few resources such as a printer, dividers for tests, and book bins. Having these resources would allow me to enhance my teaching by making things easily available to me and making our classroom library more organized.
