Many of my students are reluctant readers. They weren't very excited to hear that we were doing a novel study in Social Studies. They constantly remind me that "this isn't Language Arts!". Well, we are halfway through our first novel study, and my students are already asking what we are reading next! I'd love to build on their enthusiasm and complete another novel study with them. We are studying Africa and the impacts of apartheid, and I know my students would enjoy the young adult version of Trevor Noah's book, Born A Crime. I've hooked them with the first chapter, and now they want to read the entire book! This novel is engaging, educational, and just plain funny. A novel study using Born A Crime will support our curriculum objectives and our literacy initiative at my school.
