I am a first-grade teacher in a Title I school where most of the students on on the free and reduced meal program. It is unfortunate that Arizona does not recognize education as something that is worth investing in. In fact, Arizona remains 49th in the nation for teacher pay. That equates to about $13,000 less than the other states. In addition, Arizona education is at the bottom for school funding, receiving a D+. As many of the teachers do here, we spend much of our money on school supplies, teaching materials, books and even snacks for the kids that are less fortunate. A common item asked for every Christmas, on our angel tree, is books. With their new-found love for reading, it's not surprising that these kids get excited when we get new books. Having books at home and an adult or sibling to read to them is not possible for many of the students. We have a library so kids can take a book home, but without help, their reading usually does not improve as it should.
