These books will encourage students to build a culture of reading as an enjoyable activity. It is important as we adapt to a virtual and digital world of learning for students to be familiar with good old fashioned books. The novels can provide an intimate learning experience and provide a well needed break from the computer screens. Students often view reading as tedious task however when participating with peers it transforms learning into a leisure activity. From home they will read a story written by an author with an authentic voice that resonates with my students lifestyle. Many students have not read a book cover to cover without being it being assigned and my intent is to inspire them to Want to read. The author, Jason Reynolds, did not read a book until he was 17 years old and as an author he targets middle age kids to break the cycle. He uses common urban vernacular that is familiar for my students and hooks their interest. He delivers life lessons applicable to the urban youth connecting their life experiences to those of the characters in the text. Every morning I want to read aloud to and with my students and bond over literature. My goal after this novel is to generate excitement for the next one and create a student led book club. These novels will be the catalyst to the creation of a culture of reading.
