In environmental biology, we learn about nutrient cycling, photosynthesis, genetics (including selecting for favorable traits in plants), and the environmental costs and benefits of various farming methods. Help my students to experience indoor farming through the use of hydroponics. Indoor farming may well be the way that we manage to feed the growing human population! Using a hydroponic system all year long would really help to tie a lot of topics together from atoms and nutritional building blocks to greenhouse gases and global climate change. As an added bonus, students could consume or share the things that they are growing.
