With these new books, my students will be able to complete novel studies. During novel studies, students work collaboratively together as they read the novels and discuss the content within the text. Students read the chapters then discuss the character's thoughts and feelings, the plot, the setting, and think critically about what is happening in the story. Students connect the reading to something they have previously read, something to their own lives, or something in the world. Novel studies also improve writing skills because the students complete journal entries about their thoughts and feelings at the end of the chapters. At the end of the novels, students complete higher-order writing skills by adding to the ending of the story or writing a new story that includes a character from the book being read. There are so many great options for writing when using novel studies. The students stay focused and engaged because novel studies make reading so much more fun!!
