This project will create a classroom library for high school students to use for independent reading projects. Many students don't have the means to purchase books or the transportation to get to the library on a regular basis. Classroom libraries offer students a variety of books which they can explore every day. Studies show that frequent reading is essential for college and career readiness. And more than that, I believe every student deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading! When students are able to choose their own books, they can find stories they connect with or explore topics they're interested in. Reading can also teach empathy as students explore worlds and perspectives they don't get to experience in their own lives. Simultaneously, they are learning skills necessary for reading comprehension, critical thinking, and sophisticated writing. Many teens claim they don't know what to read or don't like to read, but having a classroom library will expose them to the extremely diverse world of literature that's just out there waiting for them. Classroom libraries let students choose a title that's important or relevant to them as individuals, rather than just reading what's on the standard curriculum. With a little guidance and direction, students will certainly find a book that they enjoy and could potentially lead them to a lifelong love of reading.
