My sculpture students will research the Day of the Dead (dia de los Muertos), a Mexican cultural holiday celebrated in late October and early November to celebrate family that have passed away. Calaveras, or skulls, represent one of the deceased family members. Typically, these are made out of sugar, but my students will be using paper mache and wire so they have something more permanent. They will be creating skull armature out of wire and then using paper mache to cover the skulls. Once complete, they will decorate the skulls based on designs they have researched.
