My FACS students have the unique opportunity to put hands-on food safety skills into practice through cooking labs and demonstrations in the FACS kitchen lab. While our kitchen currently has ovens to use, our ovens are very old and do not perform at the optimum level. The ovens that my students currently have to work do not always heat properly and take much longer to cook food thoroughly due to the extensive time it takes for the elements to fully pre-heat and cook food properly and safely. Unfortunately, our ovens are so old that they are no longer covered by any warranties and the expense in repair would be more than the unit is worth.
As a teacher that desires to prepare all of my students for career success, I want my students to have the best possible equipment and resources to work with as they learn.
New ovens would not only benefit my FACS students, but it would also benefit our school and community as a whole. My students are frequently preparing food as a service to outside groups, including serving meals for teachers working late during Evening Advisement, appreciation events for Teacher Appreciation Week, serving to prepare meals for hospice families, and even preparing food for events for other school and community groups. Just as the kitchen is the heart of many homes, our FACS kitchen at Houston County High School often becomes a heart of service for our school. Properly equipping this space will not only provide the best equipment for students to learn, but the best equipment for students to serve.
