As a teacher of color, I have been trying for many years to be approved to teach a multicultural literature course, but I am always rebuffed. Long story short, I have been going my own way to create a curriculum that better meets the diverse needs of my students. Of course, I have been given no funds for these texts, so I have been using digital copies during COVID, and have only a handful of physical copies. If I had at least a class set of each of the texts (40 books, yes, that is sadly how large my classes are) it would allow me to make sure more students that needed access to physical texts could have it. Even though the texts are not what would be considered "standard" texts, each is used to address skills and standards that are required. For example, with 'Talking Leaves' (9th grade), we look at Campbell and the hero's journey, and the idea of how the concept of the monomyth ties cultures together. With 'Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide' (10th grade), we look at the idea of being an outsider, and the different ways self expression can provide freedom. *'Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide' and 'Every Day' will be used in my 10th grade class (SPED) *'Talking Leaves', 'They Called Us Enemy', 'Black Enough: Stories of Being Young & Black in America', and 'Us, in Progress: Short Stories' will be used in my 9th grade classes (2 SPED, 2 EL)
