I have begun a 4-year training process of making my classroom more student-centered. In trying to give my students more choice in what they learn and how they learn, I thought a good place to start would be allowing them to choose where they learn. I've been allowing students to pick where they work around the room, and they love it! After a few weeks, we had a class meeting to develop expectations and consequences and to plan how to efficiently share the 8 (flat!) beanbag chairs I have. Students politely mentioned that it would be neat to have various items to use around the room to make the floor more efficient and comfortable to work. They even offered to donate a few dollars themselves, but we are a low income community, and I don't want to do that. Students helped me locate items online that they would enjoy using. We also developed a plan for daily clean up and consequences for not putting chairs or materials away properly. They are loving the ownership, and I have found more interest from disengaged students when giving them the opportunity to sit on the floor! This project will enhance the freedom for them.
