When people see performances the words, dances moves or music is often the first thing that is acknowledged. However, strong costumes, props and set pieces can push performance to the next level, ultimately strengthen the message or theme. My step team's theme for their Black History Month Show is "Even when surrounded by darkness...we will shine." These props and costumes will captivate their audience and strengthen their message. Students on the step team will learn that words are powerful, but visuals can create a cathartic experience. By adding production elements you can touch and connect with so many more people in your audience. Some people may hear the message, but it may not sink all the way in. Sometimes hearing and seeing can be the thing that reaches the heart.
