These materials would be distributed for students to use at their individual homes for direct instruction and reinforcement of content. This would also ensure each student has the necessary materials to successfully complete each task. Additionally, it would eliminate time wasted on children scrambling to find other materials to use. For example, I can give the direction, "Please get your notebook." Each student has "ownership" and this would increase their motivation to participate in the activity. It would also teach them how to set-up their pages, meaning correct format and headings, and would let them see the progression from lesson to lesson. They could refer back to previous lessons instead of losing scraps of paper. Manipulatives are an important part of math, particularly in these younger students. Utilizing the same type of counters in math class would benefit their understanding of the skill or strategy being taught. They could also learn from each other as they share the steps they take to solve the problem. Writing is so important across all content areas but unfortunately, can be the biggest challenge for students. The magic board would allow kids to have fun with their writing and math. They would be a good incentive when practicing math facts and sight words, for example. These materials would allow everyone - students, families, and myself an effective way of making sure the kids are ready and motivated for each lesson. Parents could then review the lessons with their child for additional reinforcement. We must do all we can to keep encouraging our children's love of learning!
