When speaking with the students about their wishes for our classroom, they immediately agreed about replacing our two, sad beanbags that should be in the dumpster. The students don’t want to sit on the tile floor or at their desks when trying to enjoy books. They expressed their wish to sit in comfortable seating like adults. Two students suggested rocking chairs because the rocking motion calms them and helps with their ability to focus. All of the students agreed quickly and then decided on an area in the room where we could design our own living room. Three students wanted cushions on the chairs. Then the idea for a rug was shared to protect the floor from the chairs, followed by an end table as a place to set their water bottles while reading. I have one student who gets migraine headaches and we can only turn off one row of the fluorescent lighting because we have no window for natural light. The magnetic light covers for the ceiling lights will help to lessen the brightness of the fluorescent bulbs. Our classroom is our home away from home with a need for comfort throughout each day. The students are excited about the thought of being comfortable while enjoying their independent reading. One of my students after class teared up about being able to use this space as an area to calm down when his feelings are escalated. This project would greatly help us to carry out his behavior plan without having him go to the office, which can create more anxiety for him. How wonderful it would be to have my students’ needs met through a more comfy, cozy, and calming classroom!
